A friend and I were out walking at the Arboretum, and these pink bows caught my eye. Remember getting to play in a space built just your size? What is it that makes that so special and inviting to the imagination?
As adults, we need that, too. A place that provides just enough shelter from nay-saying grownups, just enough room to touch the ground, just enough quiet for imaginative play to unfold. Do you have such a play space?
Since selling my house of 23 years two summers ago, I’ve been in the practice of making room for my creative stuff. Often smaller than I’d like, it’s enough. Or at least that’s the perspective I’m choosing to practice. What long for and am learning to create is the safety of turning inward, the experience that I feel in this picture, when I am naturally invited to play with my own creative musings. Sometimes outside on a walk, or at my studio table in my new apartment, or even at the keyboard, I love entering the play space that feels like home.
As we walked by this little girl playing, our conversation hushed to a whisper. She didn’t even look up, but my friend and I could sense the quiet delight of the world this child was present to.
May you and your inner artist notice, find or create your kind of play space today.
If you’d like to discover more about your own inner artist and to understand more about what she needs to thrive and be happy, you are invited to the upcoming Artist’s Way class with me.
