A few years ago I learned about the Inuksuk. Created by the Inuit, these important objects were used to mark navigation points or message centers. After an environmental art experience in Colorado with my friend and mentor Alis Olsen, I came home with these southwestern stones and built my own version of this navigation marker. Maybe I hoped it would lead me home, or remind me where I am going. Over the last three years, I have stacked and re-stacked these stones. As soon as they seemed steady, I’d notice them toppled over. Was a squirrel tipping them? A bird perching on top? At most it would stay in tact a few days at a time. Then, this summer, something happened. This particular structure has lasted over six weeks so far. What’s different? Am I more grounded? Did I finally find a stable design? Maybe the lesson is to stay low to the ground… and notice what shapes fit naturally together. I do appreciate this marker.
